Three charges, not one
- $49 a month. Billed month to month once you are live, with no long-term contract, and the same whether you have ten members or ten thousand.
- 4.9% of every successful charge. On top of the $49, not instead of it. This is the part that grows with you.
- Stripe's processing. Memberful requires your own Stripe account, and Stripe charges its own rate, typically 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction in the US.
Memberful has one self-serve plan rather than a ladder, so there is no tier to climb to lower the percentage. Everything on the pricing page is included in it: checkout with Apple Pay and Google Pay, free and paid trials, group and gift memberships, global tax collection, unlimited members, a website and newsletter builder, podcasts and downloads, and integrations with WordPress, Mailchimp, Discord and Kit. Courses run through a WordPress course plugin such as LearnDash or Sensei, which Memberful integrates with.

That is the shape of Memberful pricing: cheap in proportion when you are small, and a bill that tracks revenue once you are not. At $10,000 a month the percentage alone is 10 times the subscription.
Is Memberful worth it?
For a publisher with a WordPress site they already like, often yes. Memberful is a well-built payment and access layer that sits in front of your own site on your own domain, the Stripe account and the customer relationship stay yours, and it is a Patreon company. The case against it is the percentage at scale, and the fact that the room your members gather in, and any course, usually live in other tools you connect. How Drry compares (the disclosed pitch)
Drry takes 0% of member payments on every plan, the free one included, and payments run on your own Stripe account, so Stripe's processing is the only thing that comes off. The free plan holds up to 100 members with no card; Creator is $29 a month.
- At $1,000 a month: $29 + $59.00 Stripe = $88.00 on Creator, against $157.00. That is $69.00 a month less.
- At $10,000 a month: $29 + $590.00 Stripe = $619.00, against $1,129.00. That is $510.00 a month, $6,120.00 a year.
The trade-off is shape rather than price. Memberful guards a site you already run; Drry is the place members come to, with the community feed, courses, email and events built in, and it is not a WordPress plugin. Is Memberful free?
Free to try, not free to run. You can build and test in test mode for as long as you like, and Memberful starts charging only when you connect Stripe and turn on live payments. From then on the monthly price and the percentage both apply. There is no free plan for a live membership.
Does Memberful charge Stripe fees?
Memberful does not charge them, Stripe does, and you pay them. Memberful requires your own Stripe account, and its pricing FAQ says Stripe's processing fee varies by country and is typically 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. That is a third charge alongside the $49 and the 4.9%.
Is there a limit on members in Memberful?
No. Memberful's pricing FAQ says there is no cap on member count, on any plan. What grows with your members is the bill, because the percentage is charged on every payment they make.
