Your web address is permanent

How to pick the address your community lives at, what the rules are, and why this is the one decision you cannot take back.

Your community lives at an address like rachel.drry.com. You choose the first part when you sign up.

You cannot change it afterwards. Not in Settings, not by asking support. The only way to a different address is to delete the community and build a new one, which means losing your posts, your members and their subscriptions.

So it is worth two minutes of thought now.

The rules

  • Lowercase letters and numbers, with single hyphens between words

  • No spaces, no underscores, no accented characters

  • It cannot start or end with a hyphen

  • Some words are reserved and cannot be used, including app, www, admin, api and mail

The signup form checks availability as you type and tells you straight away if something is taken or not allowed.

If you want your own domain instead

You are not stuck with drry.com forever. On the Creator plan and up you can connect a domain you own, so your community is served from community.yoursite.com or your own root domain.

That does not replace your Drry address, it sits alongside it. Both keep working. So a Drry address you are lukewarm about is a much smaller problem than it feels like on day one, as long as it is not actively embarrassing.

Common questions

Someone has taken the address I want. Can you free it up?

No. Addresses are first come, first served, and we do not reclaim one community's address for another.

What happens to my address if I connect a custom domain and then downgrade?

Your custom domain starts redirecting to your Drry address within about a minute, and your community keeps working on the Drry address. Upgrade again and the custom domain resumes with no DNS work.

Does the address show up in emails to my members?

Links in member emails point at your community, so yes. The sender address is ours, and the branding is yours.
