Turn your blog off

What turning the blog off keeps, what stops, what keeps happening, and how to turn it back on. Nothing is deleted.

Turning the blog off takes it offline without deleting anything. Only the owner and admins can do it.

  1. Open Settings

In Blog, open the Settings tab. The first row reads Blog is on.

  2. Switch it off

Drry asks Turn off the Blog? (with your blog's name) and lists exactly what happens, from your own numbers. Press Turn off, or Keep it on.

What the confirmation says

  • Kept: all your posts, drafts included, your authors and your subscribers. Nothing is deleted.

  • Stops: your blog's address stops showing posts, and its links lead nowhere until it is back. The subscribe band goes with it, so nobody new can sign up. If the blog is your homepage, visitors see your join page instead until it is back.

  • Keeps happening: a scheduled post still goes live on time, but nobody can read it until the blog is back. A scheduled post's email is held as a draft instead of being sent, so nobody is emailed a link that leads nowhere.

It also means your blog is left out of your sitemap, its RSS feed answers nothing, and Email this post is locked until the blog is back on.

What you see in your console

The Blog page says Blog off, with Turn it on in Settings beside it. Every live post is labelled Published, blog off. You can keep writing, previewing and scheduling as usual, and Preview still shows a post as readers will see it once the blog is on.

Turn it back on

Switch Blog is off on in Settings. Everything comes back as it was: your posts, their addresses, your subscribe band and your categories.

To take a single post down while the blog stays on, unpublish it instead. See Edit a published post.
