A signup form, an offer or a layout of your own that opens over your pages, from a button or by itself.

A popup opens over your website pages: a signup form, an offer, or a freeform layout of your own. It opens from a button, or by itself after a delay, a scroll or as a visitor is about to leave. Popups are part of the website beta and are for website pages only, never landing pages.

Make one

  1. Open Website, then the Pages tab

The Popups card sits under your pages and lists each popup with its status (Live or Draft) and what it did in the last 30 days: views, clicks and how many signed up.

  2. Press New popup and pick a starting point

Form collects an email with one of your forms. Offer is a heading, a few lines and a button to your offer. Freeform is a blank canvas for words, photos and buttons anywhere. A new popup is always a draft nobody sees.

  3. Fill it in and set the rules

The editor has the popup on a canvas and a panel with three tabs: Content, When and Who & how often. A draft saves as you go.

  4. Put it live

Switch it Live on your website. A popup with a form section needs that form published first. Visitors then see it as its settings say, and every button that links to it opens it. While a popup is live, changes wait for Save changes, and visitors see them straight after.

What opens it

  • Button only: nothing opens it by itself. Any button whose destination is this popup opens it, whatever else is set. In a button's destination picker, a website page offers Popups as a kind. A live page's button can only point at a live popup.

  • Delay: a number of seconds after the page loads (3 to 120, 5 to start).

  • Scroll: how far down the page, in percent (10 to 90, 50 to start).

  • Leaving: when the visitor's pointer leaves the page. This is on a computer only and never on phones.

For anything it opens by itself you also choose Which pages it opens on (Every page or Chosen pages, and pick at least one) and Which screens it opens by itself on (Every screen, Computers or Phones). A button always opens it.

How often, and when it may open

How often one visitor meets it is Weekly to start, or Daily, Monthly, Once or Every visit. Never again once they sign up through it is on to start. That memory is one date per popup, kept in the visitor's own browser, and nothing else, so there is no cookie prompt for it. A window, Between two dates or After one, limits when it may open by itself. Leave both empty and it opens whenever it is live.

A page never opens more than one popup by itself on one visit, and never over another dialog, the checkout sheet or a field the visitor is typing in.

How it looks

  • Size: Small, Medium, Large or Full screen.

  • Where it sits: Middle, Bottom bar or Corner.

  • Behind it: Dim, Blur or None. With no backdrop, a bottom bar or corner card leaves the page under it usable.

  • A click outside closes it: on to start.

Turning off and deleting

A live popup is turned off first, and visitors then no longer see it. A switched-off popup can be deleted, whatever its history, and the confirmation says a once-live popup's numbers go with it. A button that points at a popup that is off does nothing until it is live again. A community holds up to 20 popups.

Common questions

Why did my popup not open?

Check that it is Live, that the page is one it opens on, that the screen matches, and that the visitor has not already met it inside its how-often rule or signed up through it. Exit intent never fires on phones.

Can a popup go on a landing page?

No. Popups are for website pages and collection pages.
