Automatic screening reads a post before it goes live and holds anything that looks like it needs your eyes. Members are not told a machine looked at it, and nothing is deleted: held posts wait in your queue.
What you control
The categories. Hate and harassment, mean-spirited, sexual content, threats and violence, self-harm crisis, dangerous misinformation, spam and self-promotion, and off-topic. Switch on only what matters to your community.
The strictness. Relaxed, standard or strict. Standard is the right starting point; strict will hold a noticeable share of ordinary conversation.
Your own guidance. A few lines describing what is normal here, which is what makes the difference for communities with unusual vocabulary.
What happens if it cannot decide
If the screen is unavailable, posts go through. A community that stops accepting posts because a background service is having a bad afternoon is worse than one that occasionally shows something you would rather review, and you still have the report queue.

Does it screen comments too?
Yes, the same way as posts.
Will it hold my own posts?
No. You and your team are not screened.
Is off-topic really worth turning on?
Usually not at first. It is the category most likely to hold something harmless, and off-topic posts are better solved with a category than with a hold.
